Polyetylenterephthalat, commonly known as PET or PETE, is a thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family. It is a versatile material widely used in packaging, fibers, and films. PET is formed through the reaction of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. Its chemical structure provides it with a combination of desirable properties, including strength, rigidity, clarity, and good barrier properties against gases and moisture.

A significant advantage of PET is its recyclability. It is one of the most recycled plastics globally, and recycled PET (rPET) can be used to create new bottles, containers, textiles, and other products, contributing to a circular economy. The recycling process typically involves collecting used PET items, sorting them, cleaning them, and then processing them into flakes or pellets that can be remelted and molded into new items. PET's widespread use and recyclability make it a cornerstone of modern material science and consumer goods.
