Polyetylenseter

Polyetylenseter is a term encountered in limited sources to describe a family of polyesters built from ethylene-derived diols and ester linkages. It is not a standard name in mainstream chemistry and does not designate a single well-defined polymer. In many cases the term may be a misspelling or regional variant of polyethylene ester or polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Because of this ambiguity, exact composition and properties vary across sources.

Chemical structure and synthesis: A typical polyetylenseter can be represented by the repeating unit -O-CH2-CH2-O-CO-R-CO-, where the ethylene glycol-derived segment forms ester bonds with a diacid moiety represented by R. By choosing different diacids, such as terephthalic or adipic acid, a range of materials is obtained. Production proceeds by condensation or transesterification of ethylene glycol with the diacid (or its dimethyl ester) under heat and reduced pressure with suitable catalysts.

Properties and applications: Depending on the diacid, these polymers can be transparent or semi-crystalline, with variable glass transition temperatures and barrier properties. They are proposed for packaging films, coatings, fibers, and certain engineering plastics. Recycling is similar to other polyesters, typically involving mechanical or chemical routes to recover monomers for reuse.
