Polttiaiseläin

Polttiaiseläin is a Finnish term that translates to "stinging animal" and refers to a diverse group of invertebrates that possess stinging cells, also known as cnidocytes. These cells are characteristic of the phylum Cnidaria, which includes jellyfish, corals, sea anemones, and hydras. While the term is broad, it most commonly evokes images of jellyfish due to their frequent encounters with humans, particularly in marine environments.

The primary function of cnidocytes is defense and prey capture. When triggered by physical contact or chemical cues, a nematocyst, a specialized organelle within the cnidocyte, rapidly discharges a barbed, stinging thread. This thread can inject venom, paralyze prey, or deter predators. The potency of the venom varies greatly among different polttiaiseläin species.
