Polttamatta

Polttamatta is a Finnish term meaning not burned or not lit. It functions as an adjective and an adverb and is formed from the verb polttaa (to burn) with the negative suffix -matta. The central sense is that something has not undergone combustion or ignition.

In ceramics, polttamaton savi refers to unfired clay, commonly known as greenware. This state precedes kiln firing; once fired, the material becomes poltettu keramiikka or simply fired ceramic.

In safety and materials descriptions, polttamatta describes materials that have not burned or charred under a given heat exposure, such as during flame-resistance testing where the sample remains polttamatta.

Linguistically, polttamatta is often used attributively with nouns (polttamaton savi, polttamaton materiaali), while polttamatta can also modify verbs or adjectives in sentences to indicate non-ignition or non-burning status. The related form polttamaton (unburned) is common as an attributive adjective.
