It is not a formal taxonomic category, but a descriptive label applied when a molecule or signal is observed predominantly in pollen grains or pollen tubes compared with other plant tissues.

In plant genetics and molecular biology, pollenspecific elements are leveraged to study pollen development or to drive targeted gene expression in pollen. Pollenspecific promoters, such as LAT52 from tomato, enable transgene expression specifically in pollen or pollen tubes, reducing ectopic expression in other tissues. In allergy science, pollenspecific allergens are proteins found in pollen that can elicit immune responses in sensitive people.
