Pollarointi

Pollarointi is a term used in Finnish to describe the process and state of polarization in society, particularly in politics. It refers to the increasing divergence of attitudes, values and policy preferences between groups, parties or regions, often accompanied by rising hostility or mutual distrust between opposing camps.

In political science, pollarointi can manifest as issue polarization (growing distance between groups on specific policy questions), overall ideological polarization (greater spread of positions among the population or parties), or affective polarization (increased emotional antagonism toward those with different views). It can be measured with indicators such as the dispersion of opinions, the distance between major political camps, clustering of attitudes, and the strength of partisan identities. In addition, changes in voter alignment and party platforms over time are used to assess polarizing trends.

Causes of pollarointi are multifaceted. They include media fragmentation and algorithmic personalization that reinforce echo chambers, selective exposure to information, elite polarization and strategic cueing by political actors, economic inequality, demographic shifts, and social sorting through education and geography. The combination of these factors can reduce cross-cutting dialogue and reinforce in-group loyalties.

Consequences vary. Polarization can sharpen policy choices and mobilize participation, but it also risks gridlock, reduced willingness to compromise, and increased political hostility. In some contexts, it may lead to more extreme political competition or social fragmentation. Mitigation approaches emphasize cross-cutting social ties, deliberative forums, media literacy, and policies aimed at reducing economic anxiety and information fragmentation.
