The term combines the German words *politisch* (political) and *operativen* (operational), indicating operations that are politically motivated and executed through covert means.

This concept emerged prominently during the Cold War, particularly within the intelligence apparatuses of East and West Germany. In the context of the East German Stasi (Ministry for State Security), *politischoperativen* activities were systematically employed to infiltrate political organizations, manipulate public opinion, and gather intelligence on dissidents, opponents, and foreign entities.
