PolishUkrainian is a term used to describe the cultural, historical, and demographic intersection of Poland and Ukraine, including people of mixed Polish and Ukrainian heritage and the bilateral relations between the two countries. It encompasses individual identities as well as cross-border cooperation, migration, and cultural exchange that have developed across centuries of contact.

Historically, Polish-Ukrainian interaction dates back to frontier regions and intensified under the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The 20th century brought dramatic population shifts, including postwar displacement and resettlements that reshaped communities in areas such as Galicia and Volhynia and left a lasting legacy in collective memory and regional identity. The evolving borders and political regimes of the 20th century further influenced how identities were formed and perceived on both sides.

Demographically, both nations host communities associated with this term. Ukraine has a Polish minority in western regions, while Poland accommodates a Ukrainian minority and a broader Ukrainian diaspora. Linguistically, Polish and Ukrainian coexist within mixed households, bilingual education programs, and cultural institutions. Religious and cultural practices—ranging from cuisine and music to religious rites—reflect a shared and evolving heritage.

In contemporary times, Polish-Ukrainian relations have developed into a strategic partnership within Europe. Since Ukraine’s independence in 1991, Poland has supported Ukrainian reforms and European integration. The events surrounding the 2014 crisis and especially the 2022 Russian invasion intensified cooperation, humanitarian aid, and refugee assistance, and deepened economic ties in trade, energy security, and cross-border projects.
