Poliisid

Poliisid (police officers) are sworn law enforcement officers tasked with upholding the law, protecting public order, and ensuring safety for people and property. Their duties typically include patrols, crime prevention, responding to incidents, and conducting investigations. They enforce traffic regulations, assist in emergencies, and coordinate with prosecutors, courts, and other agencies. Police powers include detaining individuals, conducting searches with legal basis, executing warrants, and applying proportionate force when necessary.

Organization and context: In many countries, policing is organized under a national or regional authority. In Estonia, policing is carried out by the Police and Border Guard Board (Politsei- ja Piirivalveamet, PPA), which operates under the Ministry of the Interior; a separate agency, the Security Police (Kaitsepolitseiamet, KAPO), handles national security matters. Local units support communities and collaborate with municipalities, while overall policy is guided by national law.

Training and careers: Becoming a police officer typically requires meeting eligibility criteria, passing physical and psychological assessments, and completing formal training at a police academy. Training covers law, criminal procedure, investigation techniques, driving and self-defense, ethics, and communication. Officers may work in uniform or plain clothes and can specialize in areas such as criminal investigation, traffic, cybercrime, or border control.

Accountability: Police actions are governed by law and subject to oversight by courts and independent bodies. Suspects have rights, including legal representation and the ability to file complaints about police conduct. Community policing and transparency are common elements of modern policing, aiming to maintain public trust and ensure effective enforcement.
