Polarstern

Polarstern is a German research icebreaker operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). Launched in 1982, it is one of the world's most advanced and versatile polar research vessels. The ship is designed to operate year-round in Arctic and Antarctic waters, with a reinforced hull capable of breaking through thick sea ice.

Polarstern's primary mission is to conduct scientific research in polar regions, covering a wide range of disciplines including oceanography, marine biology, geology, geophysics, glaciology, and atmospheric science. It is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, sampling equipment, and a helicopter for aerial surveys and access to remote locations. The vessel can accommodate up to 44 scientists and crew members.

The ship has played a crucial role in numerous international research expeditions, contributing significantly to our understanding of climate change, polar ecosystems, and the geological history of the polar regions. Its expeditions often involve long-term monitoring programs and the deployment of oceanographic moorings and buoys. Polarstern is also equipped for deep-sea research, including the operation of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).
