Polarisointimekanismeja refers to the various ways in which polarization can be induced or modified in materials. Polarization is a fundamental property of electric fields, describing the separation of positive and negative charges within a material. This phenomenon is crucial in understanding dielectric properties and their applications.

Several mechanisms contribute to polarization. Electronic polarization occurs when the electron cloud of an atom or molecule is distorted by an external electric field, causing a temporary dipole moment. This is a rapid process and is present in all materials. Ionic polarization, also known as atomic polarization, arises in ionic compounds where the positive and negative ions are displaced relative to each other by the electric field, creating a net dipole moment. This mechanism is slower than electronic polarization and requires the presence of mobile ions. Orientational polarization, or dipole polarization, occurs in materials containing permanent dipoles, such as polar molecules. In the absence of an electric field, these dipoles are randomly oriented. An external field aligns these dipoles, resulting in a net polarization. This is a relatively slow process and is temperature-dependent. Finally, space charge polarization, or interfacial polarization, happens in inhomogeneous materials with mobile charge carriers. Accumulation of charges at interfaces between different materials or at electrodes can lead to a macroscopic polarization. This mechanism is typically observed at low frequencies. The overall polarization of a material is the sum of contributions from these different mechanisms, each with its own characteristic frequency response.
