Polarisaatiotestausta, or polarization testing, refers to a set of techniques used to measure and analyze the polarization state of light. Light is an electromagnetic wave that oscillates in all directions perpendicular to its direction of propagation. Polarization describes the orientation of these oscillations. Polarization testing is crucial in various fields, including optics, telecommunications, and materials science, for understanding and manipulating light.

Different types of polarization exist, such as linear, circular, and elliptical polarization. Linear polarization occurs when the electric field oscillates along a single straight line. Circular polarization is when the electric field vector rotates in a circle, and elliptical polarization is a more general case where the electric field vector traces out an ellipse.
