Polümeermolekulide

Polümeermolekulide, often referred to as polymer molecules, are large macromolecules composed of repeating structural units called monomers. These monomers are linked together by covalent bonds, forming a long chain. The process by which monomers join to form a polymer is called polymerization. Polymers are ubiquitous in nature and have a wide range of applications in modern life.

Natural polymers include essential biological molecules such as proteins, nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), and polysaccharides like cellulose and starch. Proteins are formed from amino acid monomers and are vital for numerous biological functions, including enzyme activity and structural support. Nucleic acids, made of nucleotides, carry genetic information. Cellulose and starch, composed of glucose monomers, serve as structural components in plants and energy storage, respectively.

Synthetic polymers are man-made and are developed for specific purposes. Common examples include polyethylene, used in plastic bags and bottles, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), found in pipes and flooring. Polystyrene is used in packaging and insulation, while nylon is a strong synthetic fiber used in textiles and ropes. The properties of a polymer are determined by the type of monomer, the length of the polymer chain, and how these chains are arranged. These properties can include flexibility, strength, elasticity, and resistance to heat and chemicals, making polymers highly versatile materials.
