Poisoton

Poisoton is a fictional elementary particle introduced in theoretical discussions as a simple model to illustrate how Poisson statistics can appear in quantum detection events. The name combines the Poisson distribution with the -ton suffix commonly used for particle quanta.

In the standard fictional framework, a poisoton is described as a neutral, spin-0 boson with very weak interactions with ordinary matter. It is imagined to propagate as a light field and to be produced in rare processes. When emitted into a detector, the counting of poisoton events over a fixed interval is modeled as a Poisson process with a rate parameter λ, so that the probability of observing a given number of events depends only on λ and the observation time.

The theoretical treatment of poisoton often involves a hypothetical scalar field with a stochastic or Poisson-like source term. This allows for simple demonstrations of how random, independent emission events can lead to Poisson-distributed detector counts, even in a quantum setting. In such sketches, the poisoton serves as a teaching tool for concepts such as event rates, statistical fluctuations, and the quantum–classical transition in measurement.

Status and reception: Poisoton is not part of established physics. It remains a didactic construct used in thought experiments and occasional science-fiction contexts to explore statistical aspects of particle detection. There is no experimental evidence or consensus regarding its physical existence.
