Pointbased is a broad, informal term used to describe approaches, representations, or data processing methods that rely on discrete points as the fundamental units, rather than continuous fields, meshes, or polygons. The term is used across disciplines such as computer graphics, geospatial analysis, and data science to emphasize the primacy of individual samples or observations in modeling, rendering, or analysis. The exact meaning varies by domain, but the underlying idea is point-level granularity.

In computer graphics, point-based rendering and modeling use point samples in space as primary elements. A dense point cloud can be rendered directly or converted into a surface through techniques such as splatting, normal estimation, or implicit surface reconstruction. This approach is well suited to data captured by 3D scanners or LiDAR, where exact topology may be unknown or noisy. Benefits include high fidelity to measured geometry and robustness to missing data; drawbacks include potential artifacts, heavy memory use, and the need for post-processing to produce continuous surfaces suitable for certain applications.

In spatial analysis and GIS, point-based data consists of observations tied to specific coordinates, such as event locations or sensor readings. Analyses focus on patterns, density, interpolation, and proximity, often using methods designed for point patterns or point process modeling. Point-based data contrasts with polygonal or raster representations that encode area-level summaries. While flexible and precise at the data level, point-based approaches can be sensitive to sampling density and require careful treatment of biases and spatial autocorrelation.
