Poimuttaminen

Poimuttaminen, in Finnish, refers to the textile technique of creating folds or pleats in fabric by folding along defined lines and securing the folds. The term derives from poimu meaning fold and the -ttaminen suffix indicating an action or process. Poimuttaminen is used to add volume, texture, or shaping to garments and decorative textiles.

Process and methods: pleating can be done by hand or with machines. The fabric is marked along guide lines, then folds are created and fixed by pressing, stitching, or heat-setting, depending on the material. For permanent pleats, temperature and steam settings are used especially with synthetic fibers; natural fibers may rely more on starches and careful pressing. Proper alignment of grain and fold lines is essential to maintain even appearance.

Types of pleats: knife pleats (single-direction folds), box pleats (paired folds forming a flat front), inverted pleats (folds tucked inward), and accordion or fan pleats (narrow, closely spaced folds). Other forms, such as cartridge pleats or goffered textures, are variations used for specific effects.

Materials and care: the choice of fabric influences the pleating method and durability. Heavy fabrics hold structure differently than lightweight silks or synthetics. Care guidelines vary: some pleats are reusable after washing with appropriate heat or press settings, while others are temporary and require reformation after laundering.

Applications: poimuttaminen is common in skirts, dresses, uniforms, and theater costumes, as well as in home textiles like drapes or decorative trims, where structured folds contribute to silhouette or visual texture.
