Pohjelihaksia

Pohjelihaksia refers to the muscles located in the calf of the human leg. The primary muscles in this group are the gastrocnemius and the soleus. The gastrocnemius is the larger, more superficial muscle, visible as the two prominent bulges at the back of the lower leg. It originates from the femur and inserts into the calcaneus (heel bone) via the Achilles tendon. The soleus muscle lies beneath the gastrocnemius, originating from the tibia and fibula and also inserting into the heel bone via the Achilles tendon.

These muscles work together to perform plantar flexion, which is the movement of pointing the foot downwards. This action is crucial for standing on your toes, walking, running, and jumping. The gastrocnemius also assists in flexing the knee. Both muscles are highly active during standing and walking to counteract gravity and maintain posture.

Injuries to the pohjelihaksia can include strains, tears, and contusions, often occurring during athletic activities or sudden forceful movements. Conditions like shin splints can also involve pain and inflammation in this region. Rehabilitation often focuses on strengthening and stretching exercises to restore function and prevent re-injury. Regular exercise that engages these muscles contributes to overall leg strength and mobility.
