Poetnost

Poetnost is a term used in several Slavic languages to denote the quality or state of being poetical. It refers to the overall feel, atmosphere, and aesthetic effect that language can achieve when it embodies poetic sensibility. In literary criticism, poetnost may be used to describe how strongly a text evokes imagery, emotion, rhythm, and musicality beyond straightforward prose.

Etymology and usage vary by language. The word is formed from the stem related to poetry (poet) and the common Slavic suffix to indicate a state or quality (such as -nost). Because of this, poetnost is often treated as a broad, evaluative category rather than a precise linguistic feature. In practice, it is discussed in contexts of style, rhetoric, and aesthetics, and is sometimes translated as “poeticness,” “poetic quality,” or “poetic style” in English.

In some languages, poetnost appears in historical or theoretical discussions of style and has been used to contrast elevated, figurative language with plain or realist expression.
