Podjetništvo, in Slovenian usage, refers to the activity of creating and running new ventures to create value, drive innovation, and often generate economic return or social impact. It involves identifying opportunities, assembling resources, and taking calculated risks to bring ideas to market.

Historically linked to trade and crafts, the concept expanded during the industrial era and the digital age. Today podjetništvo encompasses startups, small and medium enterprises, and social ventures, all contributing to growth, employment, and competitiveness across sectors and economies.

Core activities include recognizing opportunities, building a viable business model, developing products or services, acquiring capital and talent, launching operations, and scaling. Entrepreneurs must navigate uncertainty, competition, and regulatory environments while maintaining ethical standards and pursuing measurable value for customers and society.

Entrepreneurial activity takes several forms, such as commercial entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, and intrapreneurship within existing organizations. In Slovenia and many countries, ecosystems support podjetništvo through education, business advisory services, incubators and accelerators, access to finance, and policy measures that reduce barriers and encourage experimentation.

Common challenges include high failure rates, financing gaps, and market-entry barriers. Success factors include a clear value proposition, adaptable business models, strong networks, disciplined execution, and continuous learning.
