Pocitos

Pocitos is a neighborhood (barrio) in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. Situated on the eastern shore of the Río de la Plata, Pocitos combines residential density with a bustling coastal promenade and a dense commercial strip and is one of the city’s most recognizable coastal districts.

Its centerpiece is Pocitos Beach, a sandy stretch along the river that draws locals and visitors for swimming, sunbathing, and sports. A long riverfront promenade runs parallel to the shore, flanked by cafés, bars, and apartments, and forms a popular setting for strolls and outdoor activities.

Historically, Pocitos developed as Montevideo expanded along the coast in the early 20th century. The neighborhood emerged from a mix of early houses and later high-rise residential towers, and it has maintained a compact urban feel with a variety of services within walking distance.

Today Pocitos is a middle- to upper-middle-class area with a lively dining and shopping scene. The residential stock includes older houses and modern towers, and the coastal location makes it one of the city’s prime areas for both living and leisure.

Public transportation serves Pocitos with multiple bus lines connecting it to central Montevideo and other neighborhoods, while proximity to main avenues facilitates car travel. The district also hosts schools, parks, and cultural venues that reflect its coastal, urban character.
