Plot twists are narrative devices that introduce a radical change in the direction or expected outcome of a story. They are intended to surprise the audience while remaining coherent with the story's world and established rules. A successful twist reframes events, motivations, or character perceptions, often prompting a re-evaluation of earlier scenes.

Common forms include: unreliable narrators who distort or conceal information; revelations about a character's identity or true motives; misdirection or red herrings that lead audiences to anticipate one outcome before a different one is revealed; hidden relationships; time-related twists such as memory gaps, flashbacks that alter chronology, or the revelation that actions occurred out of order; and genre-blending twists that switch the tone from thriller to tragedy, or from science fiction to a mystery.

Plot twists have ancient roots in Greek tragedy and classical literature, where revelatory moments redefined fates. In modern times they became a staple of detective fiction, film noir, and horror. Notable examples include the use of unreliable narration in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (1926) and the cinematic twist in The Sixth Sense (1999). Across media, twists appear in novels, films, television, and video games, reflecting evolving storytelling techniques and audience expectations.

Crafting a twist involves careful foreshadowing, internal consistency, and clear stakes. Critics note that twists should be earned, avoiding contrivance or overreliance on coincidences. When well executed, a twist can deepen themes, complicate character arcs, and increase audience engagement; when poorly handled, it can seem gratuitous or deceptive.
