Plastlinser, often translated as plastic lenses, refers to optical lenses manufactured from polymeric materials. Unlike glass lenses, which have been historically dominant, plastic lenses offer a lighter weight and increased impact resistance. This makes them a popular choice for eyeglasses, safety glasses, and various optical instruments where durability and comfort are prioritized.

The most common materials used in plastic lenses include polycarbonate and high-index plastics. Polycarbonate is renowned for its exceptional shatter resistance, making it ideal for children's eyewear and sports goggles. High-index plastics, on the other hand, allow for thinner and flatter lenses, particularly beneficial for individuals with strong prescriptions, reducing the bulk and weight of their spectacles.

Plastic lenses can be fabricated with a wide range of optical properties, including correction for myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. They can also be treated with various coatings to enhance their functionality. Anti-reflective coatings reduce glare, scratch-resistant coatings improve durability, and UV-blocking coatings protect the eyes from harmful ultraviolet radiation. The manufacturing process typically involves injection molding or casting, allowing for precise shaping and customization. Despite their advantages, plastic lenses can be more susceptible to scratching than glass, necessitating the use of protective coatings.
