Plasmanäytöissä, also known as plasma display panels or PDPs, are a type of flat panel display technology that uses small cells containing plasma. These cells are located between two glass panels. Each cell contains a mixture of noble gases, typically neon and xenon, along with a small amount of mercury.

When an electric voltage is applied across the electrodes in a cell, the gas mixture ionizes and forms a plasma. This plasma then emits ultraviolet (UV) light. This UV light strikes a phosphorescent coating on the inner surface of the display. The phosphors then emit visible light in red, green, or blue, which combines to create the image seen by the viewer. The intensity of the light emitted by each sub-pixel, which corresponds to a specific color, is controlled by the amount of voltage applied.

Plasma displays were popular for large-screen televisions in the early 2000s due to their excellent black levels, wide viewing angles, and fast response times, making them well-suited for displaying fast-moving images like sports. However, they suffered from higher power consumption compared to other display technologies and were susceptible to image retention or "burn-in" if static images were displayed for extended periods. Manufacturing costs also contributed to their decline in popularity. Advancements in LCD and OLED technologies have largely surpassed plasma displays in terms of energy efficiency, resolution, and cost-effectiveness, leading to their discontinuation by most manufacturers.
