Plantà

Plantà is the Valencian term for the installation phase of Las Fallas, the annual festival centered in Valencia, Spain. It designates the process of constructing and erecting the falla monuments on their assigned sites in streets and squares, a key step before the burning event that closes the festival. The plantà marks the moment when the public first sees the finished sculptures and setups, which will remain on display for several days.

The fallas are typically built from wood, cardboard, papier-mâché and other lightweight materials, and are designed by commissions that bring together neighbors, artists, carpenters, painters and designers. Each falla consists of a main large figure or ensemble, often accompanied by smaller scenes, all mounted on a base. The installation is carried out by the local commissions under the supervision of city authorities to ensure safety and access, and there is usually a separate plantà for the infantil fallas, intended for younger participants and audiences.

Timing and scope can vary by district and year, but the plantà generally begins on the night of March 15 and continues into the early hours of March 16, with all pieces in place before the main festival activities intensify. Once the plantà is complete, the city moves toward the other events of Las Fallas, culminating in the cremà, or burning, later in March.
