Planimetrisch

Planimetrisch refers to a method of representing three-dimensional objects or spaces on a two-dimensional plane, such as a drawing or a map. This technique is fundamental in various fields including architecture, engineering, surveying, and cartography. A planimetric representation focuses on depicting the horizontal dimensions and relative positions of features without showing any vertical elevation. Essentially, it's a bird's-eye view or a top-down perspective that eliminates the effect of height.

The term "planimetric" is derived from the Greek words "planos" meaning flat or level, and "metron" meaning measure. Therefore, a planimetric drawing or map is a measurement of a flat, level surface. Common examples include floor plans in architecture, which show the layout of rooms, walls, doors, and windows as seen from above. Topographic maps, while often including contour lines to represent elevation, also have a planimetric component in their depiction of roads, rivers, buildings, and other surface features in their horizontal arrangement.

In surveying, planimetric mapping involves measuring and recording the horizontal positions of points and features on the ground. This data is then used to create maps that accurately show the spatial relationships between different elements of a landscape. The absence of vertical information is a defining characteristic, distinguishing planimetric representations from other forms of technical drawing like elevations or sections.
