They combine the functionality of a planer and a milling machine. A planer typically uses a reciprocating cutting tool to remove material from a stationary workpiece. A milling machine, on the other hand, uses a rotating cutter to remove material from a moving workpiece. A planer-milling machine integrates these principles, often featuring a large bed that moves the workpiece, and one or more milling heads that can traverse across the workpiece.
