Planeettapyöröitä, also known as planetary gears, are a type of gear system consisting of one or more small gears, called planet gears, rotating along the inside of a larger gear, called the sun gear. These planet gears are typically mounted on a carrier that also rotates. The outer gear, often called the ring gear, has internal teeth that mesh with the planet gears.

This configuration allows for significant gear reduction within a compact space. The sun gear, planet gears, and ring gear can all be driven or held stationary, leading to a variety of possible output speeds and directions relative to the input. This versatility makes planetary gear systems highly adaptable for different applications.

The primary function of a planetary gear set is to transmit torque and modify speed. By changing which component is the input, output, or held stationary, different gear ratios can be achieved. For instance, if the sun gear is the input, the carrier is the output, and the ring gear is held stationary, a reduction in speed occurs. Conversely, if the carrier is the input and the sun gear is held stationary, a speed increase can be achieved.

Planetary gear sets are commonly found in automatic transmissions for vehicles, where they are essential for selecting different gear ratios. They are also used in wind turbines, industrial machinery, and even in some electric screwdriver designs due to their high torque capacity and efficiency. Their compact nature and ability to provide multiple ratios from a single unit are key advantages.
