Pistepäätähtäimet, also known as "dot sights" or "red dot sights" in English, are a type of optical gun sight that uses a red illuminated dot or reticle to aid in aiming. Unlike traditional iron sights or magnified scopes, pistepäätähtäimet typically offer a non-magnified, 1x view. The aiming point is projected onto a lens, appearing to float at the target distance, allowing for quick and intuitive target acquisition.

The primary advantage of a pistepäätähtäin is its speed. The illuminated dot is easily visible against various backgrounds and in different lighting conditions, enabling the shooter to align the dot with the target rapidly without needing to focus on multiple sight elements. This makes them particularly popular for applications requiring fast, close-to-medium range engagement, such as law enforcement, military use, and competitive shooting sports like dynamic shooting disciplines.

Some advanced models feature solar power as a supplement or primary power source. The construction is typically rugged to withstand recoil and harsh environmental conditions. The lack of magnification means they are generally less suited for precision shooting at extended distances compared to magnified scopes.
