Pipelinedækning

Pipelinedækning is the protective and insulating covering applied to pipelines to protect against corrosion, heat loss, mechanical damage and weathering. The term covers the combined system of coatings, insulation, and protective layers used along the length of a pipeline.

In practice, pipedækning consists of coating systems, insulation layers, and outer protective jackets. Commonly used coatings include primers and outer layers such as epoxy or polyurethane, sometimes supplemented by bituminous coatings. Insulation can be preformed or sprayed and may consist of polyurethane foam, phenolic foam or mineral wool. Outer jackets may be made of aluminium, steel or composite materials, and additional protective layers such as concrete mats or polymer wraps can be employed to provide mechanical protection and abrasion resistance.

Applications of pipedækning span buried pipelines, underwater installations, offshore platforms, and exposed above-ground sections. The choice of materials and arrangement depends on factors such as operating temperature, fluid characteristics, soil conditions, environmental exposure, and expected service life. The goal is to minimize heat losses, prevent corrosion, withstand mechanical impact, and allow for inspection and maintenance.

Installation and quality control involve surface preparation, coating application, and curing, followed by insulation fitting, jacket installation, and protective backfilling. Quality assurance includes checklists for surface cleanliness, coating thickness, adhesion, and holiday testing to detect coating failures. Regular maintenance and inspection are required to identify damage, provide repairs, and schedule re-coating or replacement to extend service life.
