Pintapelastusmenetelmiä are techniques used to extinguish fires that are located on the surface of a material. These methods are particularly relevant for Class A fires, which involve ordinary combustible materials like wood, paper, and textiles. The primary goal of pintapelastusmenetelmiä is to remove or reduce one or more elements of the fire triangle: heat, fuel, or oxygen.

Cooling the fuel is a common approach. Water is frequently used for this purpose as it absorbs a significant amount of heat when it evaporates. This lowers the temperature of the burning material below its ignition point, thus extinguishing the flame. Foam is another agent used for cooling and also for smothering. Foam can be applied as a blanket over the burning surface, displacing oxygen and preventing the fire from spreading.

For small fires, a rug or a fire blanket can be effective. In larger fires, specialized extinguishing agents like foam or dry chemical powders are used to create a barrier between the fuel and the air.

Removing the fuel source is another fundamental principle. This involves separating the burning material from unburnt fuel or by moving the burning material away from other combustibles. For instance, in a wildland fire, creating a firebreak by clearing vegetation can prevent the fire from advancing.
