Pintalevytykset, commonly known as surface mounting technology (SMT), is a method in which electrical components are mounted directly onto the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB). This contrasts with through-hole technology (THT), where component leads are inserted through holes drilled in the PCB. SMT has become the dominant method for assembling electronic devices due to its numerous advantages.

Components are significantly smaller and lighter, allowing for more complex circuitry to be packed into a smaller space.
