Pingstförsamlingarna

Pingstförsamlingarna, commonly known as Pentecostal congregations or churches, are a significant part of the Protestant Christian landscape in Sweden. They belong to the wider Pentecostal movement that emerged in the early 20th century, characterized by a belief in the direct experience of God through the Holy Spirit, often including spiritual gifts such as speaking in tongues, prophecy, and divine healing.

These congregations are autonomous, congregational churches, meaning they are self-governing and not part of a hierarchical denominational structure. However, many Swedish Pentecostal churches are affiliated with the broader Pingst Fria Församlingar i Sverige (Pentecostal Free Churches in Sweden) organization, which provides a framework for cooperation and shared mission.

A central tenet of Pingstförsamlingarna is the importance of personal conversion and evangelism. They emphasize the Bible as the authoritative word of God and the necessity of baptism by immersion for believers. Worship services are typically lively and experiential, often featuring contemporary music, fervent prayer, and spontaneous expressions of faith.

The movement has grown considerably in Sweden since its beginnings in the early 1900s, becoming one of the largest free church movements in the country.
