Pingkommandoen

Pingkommandoen is a utility commonly found on most computer operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is a network diagnostic tool used to test the reachability of a host on an Internet Protocol (IP) network. The name "ping" is derived from the sonar technique of sending out a sound pulse and listening for the echo.

When the ping command is executed, it sends an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo Request packet to a specified destination host. If the destination host is reachable and configured to respond, it will send back an ICMP Echo Reply packet. The ping command measures the round-trip time for these packets, which is often referred to as latency. It also reports on packet loss, indicating if any packets did not reach their destination or if replies were not received.

The output of the ping command typically includes the IP address of the destination, the size of the ICMP packets sent, the time-to-live (TTL) value, and the round-trip time in milliseconds for each reply. A continuous ping can be performed to monitor network stability over time.
