Pinchanalyysiä, often translated as "pinch analysis," is a systematic methodology used in chemical engineering and process design to optimize energy usage. It is a key tool in process integration, aiming to minimize the external heating and cooling requirements of a process by maximizing the recovery of heat internally. The core idea is to understand the thermal relationships between different streams within a process and to identify opportunities for heat exchange.

The analysis involves plotting the temperature of hot streams and cold streams against their heat content. Hot streams are those that need to be cooled, and cold streams are those that need to be heated. By visualizing these temperature-enthalpy profiles, one can identify the potential for heat transfer between hot and cold streams. The analysis helps determine the minimum temperature difference, known as the "pinch," below which heat transfer becomes thermodynamically inefficient.

The pinch itself represents a temperature where the hot and cold utility demands are at their minimum. Above the pinch, heat is transferred from hot streams to cold streams, and below the pinch, the same principle applies. However, streams cannot cross the pinch temperature; hot streams are cooled above it, and cold streams are heated below it. This constraint is crucial for optimizing energy recovery.

The ultimate goal of pinch analysis is to design a heat exchanger network (HEN) that achieves the minimum heating and cooling requirements identified.
