Pilotaj

Pilotaj is a plural Esperanto adjective meaning “pilot-related,” “of pilots,” or “pertaining to piloting.” It describes nouns that have a connection to pilots or to the act of piloting. In Esperanto, adjectives agree with the noun in number, so the singular form is pilota and the plural form is pilotaj.

Etymology and grammar: pilotaj is formed from the adjective pilota, which itself derives from the noun piloto (pilot) with the standard -a adjective suffix. To modify a plural noun, the adjective takes the plural -j ending, yielding pilotaj. This form does not function as a standalone noun; it remains an adjective whenever describing another word.

Usage: Pilotaj is used to characterize plural nouns related to pilots or piloting. For example, pilotaj uniformoj means “uniforms of pilots” or “pilot uniforms,” and pilotaj aviadiloj can be read as “pilot-related aircraft” or “aircraft used by pilots.” More broadly, it can describe organizations, equipment, procedures, or literature that concern pilots or the practice of flying.

Notes: As with all Esperanto adjectives, pilotaj appears before the noun it modifies and agrees in number but not gender. It is common in technical or descriptive writing to specify a clear relationship, such as pilota aŭtiko (pilot-related autopilot) or pilotaj reguloj (piloting rules).
