Piikkikatetrit, or "spiny caterpillars," is a colloquial term used in Finnish to describe certain types of caterpillars that possess sharp, needle-like spines or hairs. These spines can vary in length and density, depending on the species, and are often used as a defense mechanism against predators. While some species are harmless, others may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in humans due to the venomous nature of their spines.

The most well-known spiny caterpillar in Finland is the *Pale Tiger Moth* (*Arctia caja*), also called the "woolly bear" or "woolly caterpillar." Its caterpillars are covered in dense, black and orange-brown hairs that can irritate the skin upon contact. Another notable species is the *Luna Moth* (*Actias luna*) caterpillar, which has long, thin spines. These caterpillars are typically found in forested areas, feeding on leaves of various trees and shrubs.

Spiny caterpillars play an important role in their ecosystems as both prey and predators. While they may be unappealing to humans, they are a vital food source for birds, small mammals, and other insects. Their presence also helps control plant populations by feeding on foliage.

Handling spiny caterpillars requires caution. If touched, their spines can cause skin irritation, itching, or even more severe reactions in sensitive individuals. Washing the affected area with soap and water and avoiding scratching can help alleviate discomfort. In cases of severe irritation or allergic response, medical advice should be sought.

These caterpillars undergo metamorphosis, transforming from larvae into moths. The adult stage is often short-lived, with many species living only a few days as adults, focusing primarily on reproduction. Their larvae, however, can remain in the environment for extended periods, contributing to their ecological significance.
