Pigmentindustrie is the sector of the chemical industry that produces pigments—substances that color materials without altering their fundamental chemistry. Pigments are used in paints, coatings, plastics, inks, textiles and cosmetics where color quality, opacity and lightfastness are important.

Pigments are categorized as inorganic (for example titanium dioxide, iron and chromium oxides) and organic (such as phthalocyanine, quinacridone and azo pigments), plus carbon black. Inorganic pigments typically offer opacity and stability, while organic pigments often provide a wider color range and higher tinting strength but may have different lightfastness and chemical resistance.

Production combines synthesis or precipitation with milling and dispersion to achieve suitable particle size and dispersibility. Surface treatments improve compatibility with binders and reduce settling. The industry is globally oriented, with major producers in Asia, Europe and North America, and markets organized around coatings, plastics, inks and masterbatches.

Applications cover architectural and industrial coatings, automotive finishes, packaging, plastics, textiles and cosmetics. Demand follows construction activity, automotive production, packaging growth and consumer preferences for durable, color-fast products.

Regulation such as REACH governs pigment registration and safety in the EU. Sustainability trends drive lower environmental impact, restrictions on hazardous materials, and development of alternative pigments and recycling-friendly solutions.
