PiezoDüsen, also known as piezoelectric injector nozzles, are a type of fuel injector that utilize piezoelectric actuators to control the injection of fuel. These actuators are made from piezoelectric ceramic materials which exhibit the property of changing their shape when an electric voltage is applied to them. This rapid and precise deformation of the piezoelectric element is used to open and close the injector nozzle.

The operation of a PiezoDüse relies on the inverse piezoelectric effect. A stack of piezoelectric crystals is integrated into the injector. When a voltage is applied, the crystals expand, causing a pin or needle valve within the nozzle to lift and open. This allows fuel to be injected into the combustion chamber. By precisely controlling the voltage applied, the duration and timing of the injection can be managed with very high accuracy.

PiezoDüsen offer several advantages over traditional solenoid-based injectors. Their primary benefit is their extremely fast response time, enabling much shorter and more frequent injection events. This allows for finer control over fuel atomization and mixing with air, leading to improved combustion efficiency, reduced fuel consumption, and lower emissions. The precise control also allows for multiple injection events within a single combustion cycle, which can further optimize the combustion process. These injectors are commonly found in modern diesel engines, particularly in common rail systems, where their performance characteristics are highly valued.
