The name "pieprastais" is derived from the Latvian word for pepper, reflecting the spicy, pepper-like flavor of some species, particularly *Lepidium meyenii*, also known as maca. This genus comprises approximately 100 species, primarily found in temperate and subtropical regions worldwide, with many species native to North America, Europe, and Asia.
