Pielektroni

Pielektroni, or pi-electrons, are electrons that occupy pi molecular orbitals in molecules with unsaturated bonds or conjugated systems. They arise from sideways overlap of adjacent p orbitals on atoms such as carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, and they lie above and below the plane of the molecule, perpendicular to the σ-framework. Pi electrons are distinct from sigma electrons, which form the strong, end-to-end bonds along the molecular backbone.

In many organic systems, pi electrons are delocalized over several atoms. This delocalization is the hallmark of conjugation and is central to aromaticity. In cyclic, planar, fully conjugated rings, pi electrons follow Hückel’s rule, 4n + 2 electrons, which confers special stability in aromatic compounds like benzene (6 pi electrons). Systems with 4n pi electrons can be antiaromatic and destabilized, though real molecules often avoid this arrangement through structural distortions.

Pi electrons determine much of a molecule’s chemical reactivity and physical properties. They participate in electrophilic substitutions in arenes, govern the color of many dyes through pi-to-pi* electronic transitions, and influence UV–visible spectra as conjugation length increases. In polyenes and aromatic systems, the extent of conjugation lowers the energy gap between pi and pi* orbitals, shifting absorptions to longer wavelengths.

Counting pi electrons typically involves considering all double bonds and the pi-bonds formed in ring systems, including those in heteroatoms that participate in conjugation. Pi-electron behavior is described by molecular orbital theory, where pi orbitals delocalize over the participating atoms, stabilizing certain structures and guiding reactivity patterns.
