Piecedyed is a textile technique in which individual fabric pieces are dyed before they are joined to form a larger item. The method blends patchwork and dyeing to create deliberate color variation across a surface. The term appears in contemporary craft and fashion contexts but is not uniformly standardized.

Common workflows begin with selecting fabric pieces for planned color relationships. Each piece is dyed separately using fiber-reactive dyes, immersion dyeing, or resist and batik techniques. After dyeing, pieces are rinsed and set to fix color. They are then cut to size and sewn into a panel, quilt top, or garment. A final wash stabilizes the fabric and minimizes further bleeding.

Variations include gradient or tonal transitions within individual pieces, random or planned color mixing at seam lines, and the use of printed or textured surface designs on each piece. Some practitioners apply additional surface decoration after dyeing, such as quilting stitches, embroidery, or paint.

Piecedyed is valued for its strong visual impact and its potential to reuse small fabric scraps. It requires careful color planning to achieve harmonious or intentional contrasts, as well as attention to colorfastness to avoid bleeding between pieces. It is used in quilts, fashion tops, scarves, and wall hangings, among other textiles.

Because piecedyed is a relatively recent label in textile discourse, its history is linked to broader traditions of patchwork and piece dyeing rather than a single inventor or moment. The term underscores a shift toward pre-dyed units forming composite textiles.
