The specific type of alcohol used determines the properties and applications of the resulting phthalate. For example, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) has been widely used for its effectiveness in softening PVC.

Concerns have been raised regarding the potential health and environmental effects of phthalates. Some phthalates are considered endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with the body's hormone system. Exposure can occur through ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact.
