Photomechanically

Photomechanically refers to a process or method involving both light and mechanical action. It is often used to describe technologies or techniques where light is used to control or initiate a mechanical operation, or where mechanical components are essential for capturing or manipulating light.

In printing, photomechanical processes were historically significant. These methods utilized light-sensitive materials to transfer an image onto a printing plate. This image was then developed and etched or otherwise prepared mechanically for mass reproduction. Examples include photogravure, halftone printing, and offset lithography, which all relied on light to create the image on the printing surface.

The term can also be applied more broadly to any system where light sensors or optical devices interact with mechanical actuators or systems. For instance, in robotics, a camera might be used as a sensor to guide a mechanical arm, a process that could be described as photomechanical. Similarly, automated inspection systems often use cameras and light to detect defects, and then employ mechanical means to sort or reject faulty items. The essence is the interplay between optical input and mechanical output or control.
