Photomanagement refers to the practice and set of tools used to organize, store, and retrieve digital photographs across devices and formats. It encompasses cataloging, metadata handling, and workflow management to support efficient access and long-term preservation.

Core tasks include importing images from cameras and devices, generating and editing metadata (EXIF, IPTC, XMP), tagging with keywords, geotagging, rating, and creating albums or collections. Many systems support smart collections that automatically group images by rules, such as subject, location, or date.

Common workflows involve ingestion, cataloging and normalization, non-destructive editing, versioning, export, and backup. A photo management system often serves as a digital asset management (DAM) layer for photographers, publishers, and organizations, integrating with cloud storage, editing software, and sharing services.

Tooling ranges from consumer-grade apps such as Apple Photos and Google Photos to professional applications like Lightroom, Capture One, and Darktable, as well as enterprise DAM platforms. File formats handled include JPEG, RAW formats, TIFF, and DNG; metadata standards such as EXIF, IPTC, and XMP accompany the image files. Sidecar files are sometimes used for maintaining metadata with RAW images.

Trends include non-destructive editing, AI-assisted tagging and facial recognition, and cross-device synchronization. Privacy considerations and data governance are relevant as collections expand and personal data is processed. Proper backup and archival strategies, including local catalogs and offsite or cloud storage, support long-term access.
