Phanerochaetaceae is a family of fungi belonging to the order Polyporales. These fungi are primarily known for their saprophytic nature, meaning they obtain nutrients by decomposing dead organic matter, particularly wood. This ecological role makes them significant in forest ecosystems, contributing to nutrient cycling. Members of Phanerochaetaceae are often characterized by their thin, resupinate (crust-like and flat against the substrate) fruiting bodies, although some can develop pores. Their hyphal system is typically monomitic, consisting of generative hyphae.
