Pgehalte

Pgehalte, sometimes written as P-gehalte, is a term used to denote the content or concentration of phosphorus in a material. It is typically expressed as a mass fraction (percent by weight) or, more commonly in soils and foods, as milligrams of phosphorus per kilogram (mg/kg) or per liter (mg/L), depending on the matrix being measured.

In soils, Pgehalte is a key factor in crop nutrition because phosphorus is essential for energy transfer, root development, and overall growth. The total phosphorus content does not always reflect plant-available phosphorus, as much of the phosphorus can be bound in minerals or organic matter. Therefore, laboratories use extraction methods such as Olsen’s method, Bray methods, or Mehlich-3 to estimate readily available phosphorus, with results reported in mg/kg soil or as Olsen-P in the soil test. The interpretation of Pgehalte in soils depends on soil type, pH, and management practices.

In foods and feeds, phosphorus content is measured to assess dietary intake and to support labeling and nutrition planning. Phosphorus occurs mainly as phosphate salts and can be quantified after chemical digestion using colorimetric methods or instrument-based techniques such as atomic emission or mass spectrometry. Dietary phosphorus is an important nutrient, but excessive intake, especially with phosphorus additives, can have health implications in certain populations.

In water and environmental contexts, Pgehalte indicates potential for nutrient enrichment and eutrophication. Total phosphorus and orthophosphate are routinely monitored, with higher levels linked to algal blooms and degraded water quality. Standards and target levels vary by jurisdiction and water body type.
