Pesuainetyypeillä refers to the categorization of detergents based on their composition and intended use. This classification helps consumers and manufacturers understand the properties and applications of different cleaning agents. Broadly, detergents can be divided into anionic, cationic, nonionic, and amphoteric types, distinguished by the charge of their hydrophilic (water-attracting) head group.

Anionic surfactants, such as alkylbenzene sulfonates, are common in laundry detergents and dishwashing liquids due to their excellent foaming and cleaning abilities. Cationic surfactants, typically quaternary ammonium compounds, are often found in fabric softeners and disinfectants because of their ability to bind to negatively charged surfaces and their antimicrobial properties. Nonionic surfactants, like alcohol ethoxylates, are known for their mildness and effectiveness in removing greasy soils, making them suitable for low-foaming detergents and hard surface cleaners. Amphoteric surfactants, which can carry both positive and negative charges depending on the pH, are gentle and often used in personal care products like shampoos and body washes, as well as in specialized industrial cleaning applications.

Beyond surfactant type, detergents are also categorized by their form, such as powders, liquids, gels, and pods. Each form offers different advantages in terms of ease of use, storage, and dosing. Furthermore, detergents can be specialized for specific tasks, including laundry detergents (for clothes), dishwashing detergents (for dishes), industrial cleaners (for heavy-duty cleaning), and household cleaners (for general home use). Enzyme-based detergents are another significant category, incorporating enzymes like proteases, amylases, and lipases to break down specific types of stains, enhancing overall cleaning performance.
