Perusnäöntarkastukset are routine eye examinations performed to assess an individual's general vision and eye health. These examinations are a crucial part of preventative healthcare, as they can detect vision problems and eye diseases in their early stages, often before noticeable symptoms appear.

A typical perusnäöntarkastus involves several tests. Visual acuity is usually measured using a Snellen chart to determine how clearly a person can see at various distances. Refraction tests, which may involve using a phoropter or autorefractor, help identify refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, and determine the correct prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Ocular health is also evaluated. This can include checking for common conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. A healthcare professional may use specialized equipment, such as a tonometer to measure intraocular pressure, and an ophthalmoscope to examine the internal structures of the eye, including the retina and optic nerve.

The frequency of perusnäöntarkastukset varies depending on age, risk factors, and existing eye conditions. Generally, children should have their first eye exam around six months of age, with subsequent exams recommended at regular intervals throughout childhood and adolescence. Adults are typically advised to undergo a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years, with more frequent checks for those over 40 or individuals with a family history of eye disease or other risk factors like diabetes.
