Peruslukio

Peruslukio is a Finnish term referring to the general upper secondary school, which is a part of the Finnish education system. Following comprehensive school (yläkoulu), students can choose to continue their education at a peruslukio or a vocational school. Peruslukio offers a broad academic education and is designed to prepare students for higher education, such as university or university of applied sciences.

The curriculum in a peruslukio is divided into national core curriculum subjects and local additions. Students study a range of subjects including Finnish, Swedish, foreign languages, mathematics, biology, geography, history, and social studies. They are also offered elective courses to explore specific interests. The duration of studies is typically three years, and upon successful completion, students receive a matriculation examination certificate (ylioppilastutkinto). This certificate is the primary qualification for entry into Finnish universities.
