Perunasyöpätaudit refer to a group of plant diseases that affect potato tubers, primarily caused by fungal pathogens. These diseases can lead to significant economic losses in potato cultivation due to reduced yield and poor marketability of affected tubers. The most common and economically important perunasyöpätaudit include common scab, powdery scab, and black scurf.

Common scab, caused by the bacterium Streptomyces scabies, results in roughened, corky lesions on the surface of potato tubers. These lesions can vary in size and depth, and while they do not typically affect the edibility of the potato, they significantly reduce its cosmetic appeal and market value. Environmental factors such as soil pH and moisture content play a crucial role in the development of common scab.

Powdery scab, caused by the oomycete Spongospora subterranea, produces small, powdery pustules on the tuber surface that can eventually lead to gall-like swellings. Infected tubers may also exhibit internal discoloration. This disease can be particularly problematic in cool, moist conditions.

Black scurf is a symptom of Rhizoctonia solani infection, a fungus that affects various parts of the potato plant, including the tubers. It manifests as dark, irregular sclerotia on the tuber skin, resembling dirt that cannot be washed off. While black scurf itself doesn't usually penetrate deeply into the tuber flesh, it can be associated with other yield-reducing diseases caused by the same pathogen.

Management of perunasyöpätaudit typically involves a combination of strategies. These include crop rotation, selecting resistant potato varieties, maintaining proper soil drainage, and using certified disease-free seed tubers. In some cases, chemical treatments may be employed, though their effectiveness can vary depending on the specific pathogen and environmental conditions.
